Dr. Oei Hong Djien
Born in 1939 in Magelang, Central Java, Oei Hong Djien completed his medical degree at the University of Indonesia in 1964, and later pursued a specialization in pathology in the Netherlands from 1966 to 1968. He began his career as a volunteer doctor in Temanggung and subsequently worked as a tobacco expert with
PT. Djarum.
Widely known by his initials, OHD, Oei Hong Djien is one of Indonesia’s most prominent art collectors and a significant figure in the country’s art development. He has played a vital role in supporting renowned artists and regularly acquiring their works. OHD began collecting art in 1965. His notable collection includes masterpieces by acclaimed artists such as Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Hendra Gunawan, Soedibio, Widayat, Eko Nugroho, the Jendela Art Group, and others. With his extensive collection, he eventually established his own private museum in Magelang, named the OHD Museum of Fine Arts.
OHD is featured on this website due to a controversy that emerged in 2012 following an exhibition showcasing paintings by major Indonesian artists, including Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Widayat, Hendra Gunawan, and Soedibio. The authenticity of several works was questioned by the artists’ families and art experts.
Some paintings in his collection were ultimately proven to be forgeries, and this was publicly addressed by the artists’ families. However, OHD continues to assert that the works in his collection are genuine. The families of S. Sudjojono and Hendra Gunawan remain convinced that certain paintings attributed to these artists in his collection are not authentic.
